Optic Nerve Analysis

Optic nerve in advanced glaucoma disease.

Following a careful and comprehensive eye examination and measurement of eye pressure, your eye doctor will examine the drainage tube of the eye with a special contact lens. The retina, and specifically the optic nerve, will also be closely examined to look for any glaucoma changes. Typical follow-up for a glaucoma patient depends on the severity of the condition. However, the majority of patients are seen two to three times a year; if the glaucoma is more advanced, sometimes four to six times a year. A patient should expect visual fields at least once a year, and maybe twice a year in the more severe cases. Special pictures of the optic nerve will also be obtained on a routine basis to help the doctor detect any subtle changes from glaucoma.
